The Residences of Bexley Woods: The Wrap Up

It’s time to close some of the chapters here on this blog. I’m happy to say that as of June 1st, I found myself free of the Residences at Bexley Woods. Sure, I had to go through mires and didn’t get to sign a walk-out form despite numerous attempts, but hell, I was free so what did I care?

I emailed, called, and double-checked that everything would be fine. “Please get back to me on the final amount owed” I asked. “We will keep everything on file” I was assured. Of course, that’s not what happened at all, and it’s pretty obvious that they thought they were dealing with someone who wanted to be taken for a 3,000 ride. When I got the bill about ten days after I moved out I was livid. I called and spoke with a gentleman whose name I have but won’t post. I faxed him OVER 20 PAGES of documents about my living situation. I verified that the documents were received. I left a message for the manager.

The following week I left another message.

The Residences at Bexley Woods Should Really get their Stuff Together Part Four

Yes, part four. It should come as no surprise that the word of anyone working at the Residences at Bexley Woods means exactly as much as thin air. More misdirection and outright false hope. Apparently the verbal confirmation that I got (three times, not just once, but THREE TIMES) was not true. When I went in to get the final balance on my lease I was informed by the (brand new, AGAIN, her first day was October 29th!)  financial person that no, I could not break my lease. She didn’t know who would ever tell me that. I actually took two hours of personal time to go try to figure this mess out.

Warning to residents who read this blog IF YOU HAVE NOT PAID YOUR RENT YOU ARE BEING CHARGED FEES SINCE THE 2ND, Despite the wording that fees will start on the 3rd, they accrue them on the 2nd. The new fiance person is the one who informed me of this. This was not the old policy, and I’m sure that since it’s now cold and we’re all coughing up a car payment in energy bills, no one has the money to spare.

I won’t name her directly on the blog, but after about an hours long discussion with her, she promised to address my concerns to see if we could reach a compromise  I linked her to this blog and sent her my unanswered email communications. She promised to call me back on Monday the 5th to speak with me about a resolution. She did not keep her word to me and call her back. Even though our last words as I left her office were “even if you do not speak to the office manager, call me back. I hate it when people tell me they will do something and do not do it” she assured me she was a professional and would contact me.

She hasn’t.

EDIT 11-8-12: I called and left a message with the Residences at Bexley Woods to speak with the woman who I had spoken with on Monday. She contacted me back the same business day (today) and stated that she did call me, but that the number she had for me was wrong. I have no reason to not believe her in this instance.

There has been some progress in my place, I put plastic up over my windows and it’s not too uncomfortable for me. Thankfully I like it at about 65 degrees. Also, on Friday the maintenance crew came out and fixed most of my outlets. Altogether they replaced 6 electrical outlets. Of those, two had what we call “floating wires” in my industry. This sort of faulty wiring is probable in the whole complex, considering that they were built in the 70s and not well maintained or updated.

Faulty/Bad wiring causes fires and can result in very high electric bills.

If anything, an electrician should come out and inspect every unit for faulty wiring. It’s not just a money issue, it’s a safety issue. If 1/3 of the outlets checked in my house had the problem, then what about the rest of them?

Also, I had been told by maintenance that they would replace my stove on Monday the 5th as well. Because they actually had come out and were doing the outlets like they promised, I was very hopeful. I assured them that my dogs would be crated and made doubly sure that they would come and give me the new stove.

Not only did I not get a phone call, I didn’t get the stove, either.

Here’s the problem. I don’t need resolutions immediately. What I want is the courtesy of a phone call. When you do not do what you say you will do it degrades trust. When you do not check in when you say you will, it further degrades trust. At some point, as a resident you ask yourself “Are they really that busy, or is this just lip service?

March can’t come soon enough…

Utilities … the skinny on the Residences at Bexley Woods

Hopefully you’re looking for a place to stay and you’re having a little more luck than I am (I’ve got a good lead that I viewed today, and I’m seeing a very nice woman about a rental tomorrow, so here’s to hoping). If you’re thinking “Hey, you know, they’re fixing the places up! It’ll be okay!” Stop and think again. They aren’t going to be touching the windows and doors of these places anytime soon by their own admittance. In fact, they pretend every time that the issue is brought up, that they had no idea about it.

Rumors have it (And rumors are just that, so the following could be untrue) that the prior owner of this property got a large sum grant to update all the doors and windows, thus saving us residence hundreds a month (not making that up). Instead of doing this, however, he bought another property then filed bankruptcy. This means that our windows rattle, our doors leak, all the things that old single pane windows do. What this all boils down to, alongside the spider vent system in the units (making it “impossible” to blow/clean out, apparently), means that our utility bills are through the roof. Let’s add to this that up until the bank took over, we’ve been paying our “share” of water for the WHOLE BUILDING we are in, not just our units.

Sure, 650 looks like a deal for a two bedroom townhouse, but let’s break it down. 650 + fees for pets and whatnot = 694 dollars a month. Add the 175-300 dollars a month for electric. (I’m not making numbers up, before I went on a budget I threw down 175 and a neighbor told me she was throwing down 250 easily a month.) Add to that a fairly arbitrary water bill and you’re up to like 879 – 1044 a month. I haven’t turned the gas on yet because JUST cleaning myself, my clothes, and my things on a monthly basis cost me like 40 dollars a month. I’m utterly terrified about heating this place. Not so cheap now, is it?

The residences of Bexley Woods… is nearing the end…

I suppose I’ll do a write-up on the sky high utilities tomorrow. The good news is that they have been working around the complex. The bad news is that it’s too little too late. The utility bills are not going to be adjusted anytime soon and anything that comes from the office is simply lip service.

To their credit, however, I do have a brand new, working dishwasher (that backs up with water whenever the disposal is run) and they SEEM to be working on replacing my stove.

Also hopefully within the next week is a post about bras. Yes, I know.

Updates on the townhouse and myself

After about a weeks worth of phone tag, I got verbal confirmation that all I need to do to break my lease is provide a 30 day notice. Apparently the Residences at Bexley Woods are not even accepting new tenants right now and are instead focused on getting the property fixed. However, they aren’t going to do anything about the windows and doors anytime soon and that’s my major problem. The electric/gas bills in this complex are outrageous. I’m a single person with a full time job and I blew out 170 bucks on my electric bill before I went to a budget plan. It’s simply way too much money.

Tuesday evening they will have a sort of meet and greet at the main office from 4-7. I plan on attending, but I’m not holding my breath on anything good happening. If they could promise to lower the rent or to fix the doors and windows within the next three months, I’d stay here. But that’s not going to happen.

So I’m on the hunt for a new apartment. Had a spot of good luck today, hopefully it’ll generate some good hits. I’m hopeful for this to turn out for the best. I’m at least in a place where I can comfortably look. My treat myself weekend is next weekend (Saturday is Spa Day and Writers Workshop) and Sunday I’m going to be volunteering at a beer festival!

I suppose I’ll be able to get back to my regular posting about Engineering related stuff soon. XD

The Residences at Bexley Woods: Still Can’t Communicate.

On August 5th I attempted communication again with the Residences at Bexley Woods. Since then I’ve called numerous times but have never been contacted back in regards to my property and the repairs. Below is a record of that communication, starting with my first email, a second, and then a follow-up that is being sent today 8/12/12.
